| News

Craigavon, N.I., Tuesday 1st Febraury 2022- The College of Paramedics, in association with Galen, the privately-owned pharmaceutical sales and marketing company is pleased to announce that applications for this year’s Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award will open on Monday 31st January 2022.  The recipient will win a place on the much-coveted Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC) course and have their case study published in the College of Paramedics’ magazine, 'Paramedic INSIGHT'.

The recipient of the scholarship will take up a fully funded place on ATACC’S three-day course in the UK, widely accepted as the most advanced trauma course currently available in the world. Associated travel costs will also be covered. Entrants are required to write a case study which should be written to protect patient confidentiality, using original text, and with all appropriate references included. It must be countersigned by a paramedic colleague who is prepared to confirm that your submission is a genuine case study.

This scholarship is presented in memory of the late Dr John Hinds, who was regarded as an inspirational leader by paramedics and emergency medical technicians and indeed by anyone with an interest in pre-hospital care within Ireland. A world-renowned critical care physician, Dr Hinds gave a huge amount of his own time to educating and supporting paramedics and ambulance staff throughout the Island of Ireland. He died in 2015 following a motorcycle accident.

Dr Dennise Broderick, Managing Director & President, Galen, said: “This award is not only a fitting and lasting tribute to Dr Hinds, but it also provides a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to advance their expertise and gain access to a globally recognised, highly coveted training programme. Dr Hinds was a pioneering leader in the field of emergency trauma care who dedicated his life to helping others and Galen is extremely proud to support this annual scholarship programme in his honour.”

Imogen Carter, Executive Officer for Policy Development at the College of Paramedics said: “The College of Paramedics is proud to host this award in the name of Dr John Hinds, with Galen’s generous support. We look forward to receiving many high quality clinical case studies from responders across NI and ROI by the 21st March, a closing date for all College awards, picked as a tribute to Dr Hinds on what would have been his birthday.”

Last year’s recipient, Edel Mullen of National Ambulance Service in Ireland commented: “There's so much I can say about the ATACC course, I don't even know where to begin.

“As a newly qualified paramedic, I felt I came away with so much. The knowledge and experiences I gained from ATACC would have taken me years to gain by myself working on the road. I was a part of a really amazing team (Team Orange). They were skilled, enthusiastic and so much fun. It really made for an exciting weekend.

“It was great to be around like-minded people who were so eager to share their knowledge and help you improve your practice.”

Due to restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19, the recipient will be given more details of how the 2022 award will be presented, as soon as they are decided

Submissions should be 750–1,000 words, excluding references and appendices. As a condition of the award, the recipient will be required to submit their case study for publication in Paramedic INSIGHT magazine which has over 20,000 subscribers, along with a follow-up article that describes their experience on the ATACC course.
